Overview
Stretch marks are an inevitable part of pregnancy. Although some women do not get as many stretch marks as others, the rapid amount of weight gained during pregnancy puts you at risk of getting multiple stretch marks. Pregnancy-related stretch marks cannot be prevented entirely, but there are measures you can take to reduce the amount of stretch marks you gain throughout your pregnancy.
Cause
The skin is composed of natural collagen and fibers that help maintain its elasticity. During pregnancy, your skin's elasticity is pushed to the brink, causing these fibers to break. The American Pregnancy Association states that the stronger your skin is, the less likely the fibers are to break during pregnancy-related weight gain. Stretch marks range from pink to red to purple and brown in color.
Prevalence
Most, but not all women get stretch marks during pregnancy. According to Baby Center, your chances are higher if you are carrying multiple babies and if you have an excessive amount of amniotic fluid. Your chances are also greater if you are underweight pre-pregnancy. Baby Center explains that the more weight you gain over a short period of time, the more likely you are to get stretch marks. Because of this, the center recommends gradual weight gain throughout your pregnancy.
Preventive Measures
The American Pregnancy Association states that certain preventive measures may help reduce the occurrence of stretch marks during pregnancy. The goal is to help build skin elasticity. Hydrating the skin by drinking water helps skin's suppleness. The association also recommends eating foods rich in vitamins B2 and B3, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and silica. These help your skin form collagen and build extra fibers. Exercise can also help build skin elasticity by improving circulation, according to the association.
Treatment
Baby Center reports that there is no cure for stretch marks. However, there are treatments you can utilize either during or after pregnancy to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. While you are pregnant, you can rub a topical moisturizing cream on your abdomen, thighs and hips to help build up the skin's elasticity. The American Pregnancy Association recommends using Bio-Oil twice a day throughout your entire pregnancy. According to Baby Center, laser treatments and Retin-A creams can help reduce stretch marks. These treatments should not be used while you are pregnant or nursing.
Considerations
Stretch marks are an unappealing cosmetic issue and it can be disheartening to know that they do not entirely disappear. Stretch marks do fade on their own over time, although certain treatments may help speed up the process. Baby Center reports that pregnancy-related stretch marks typically start to fade six to 12 months after you deliver. The level of contrasting color depends upon your own skin pigmentation. Keep in mind that the texture of stretch marks does not disappear.
